The Society of St Vincent de Paul Society is an international Christian organisation. A 19-year-old student called Frederic Ozanam and his university friends founded it in 1833 in Paris. Catholic in origin and character it is dedicated to helping anyone in need and exists in 140 countries with nearly one million members.

SVP England and Wales

In England and Wales, the Society is known as the SVP and its 12,000 members continue to undertake the core work of the Society, visiting and befriending those in need, at home, in residential care, in prison or in hospital. The Society also provides material assistance where appropriate. The Society also has a raft of Special Works that provide additional services. These include: Drop-in centres, soup runs, furniture stores, holidays for children and needy families and debt counselling services. The debt counselling service has expanded over the past two years to meet increasing demands. Another area of growth has been the Community Shops programme. The Society in England and Wales is also twinned with the Society in India, Grenada, Sudan and Guyana supporting – water projects; feeding and education programmes; TB and leprosy clinics; homeless refugees; student scholarships and disaster appeals.

Youth SVP England and Wales

Youth SVP is a voluntary Christian organisation for young people. When you join a Youth SVP group, you volunteer to offer one-to-one help and support to people in need in the local community.
Youth SVP is the largest youth organisation in the Catholic Church of England & Wales. Since 1999, nearly 10,000 young people have put their faith in to action by becoming a member of Youth SVP. You can set up a Youth SVP group in a secondary school, 6th form college or parish. The first step is to recruit an adult – say, a teacher, a parent or school chaplain – who would act as your group adviser.

SVP 1833

It  started in 2007 as a voluntary group for young adults (18 – 30+) to come together to help people in need.We are part of the international Christian voluntary organisation called the Saint Vincent de Paul Society (SVP) and we share the same spiritual values and ethos. The name SVP 1833 recalls the year in which the Society was started by a young student who wanted to help the poor. 20 year old Frederic Ozanam was challenged to demonstrate his faith in action. With a group of friends he started a “Conference of charity”. SVP groups today are still known as “Conferences”.  There are Conferences based at universities and in church parishes in towns and cities. SSVP Scotland

The Society of St Vincent de Paul, or the SSVP as it is known in Scotland, has 2,300 members working in 340 local conferences in eight dioceses visiting and befriending those in need, at home, in residential care, in prison or in hospital. The Society in Scotland has a number of special works: – the Rendu project with the AIC for the pastoral support of hearing impaired adults; the Louise Project with the DCs for women caught up in drug abuse and prostitution; Ozanam Clubs for people with intellectual disability; the Ozanam Centre for homeless people; drug rehabilitation projects, furniture projects, thrift shops and caravan holidays for needy families.The Society has a number of youth conferences in universities, schools, and parishes.It is also twinned with the Society in India, South Africa and Hungary providing the support of prayer, financial resources, student sponsorship schemes and other practical help
