2010 marks the 350th anniversary of the death of St Vincent de Paul and his co-worker St Louise de Marillac. Both these saints worked tirelessly to improve the lives of the poor, serving Christ in those most impoverished. Their legacy lives on in the work of the Ladies of Charity, the Daughters of Charity, the SVP, St Wilfrid’s Centre, St Justin’s, the SVP Furniture Store and in many other organisations in our city. St Vincent’s parish Sheffield (The first Vincentian mission in England) wanted to celebrate the 350th jubilee by inviting all to a big party. A family fun day was held at St Marie’s school on Saturday 15th May. Invites went out to all the parishes in Sheffield and to the diocese in the Hallam news and we had a wonderful turnout. Thankfully we had great weather and were able to enjoy the circus show and races out in the playground. We had a shared lunch, many picnicking outside, before all congregated in the hall for an Irish dancing display, live music and a short performance of the now famous St Vincent’s panto! There was also an opportunity for having your face painted and taking part in an art competition. We finished the day by sending off helium balloons with goodwill messages and everyone recieving a bun which had made up our celebration “cake.” A good day was had by all and all free of charge too!

Please be reassured that the Vincentian Family is hard at work making a difference. You can view this latest video from the AIC showing its members and the Daughters of Charity having a positive impact. The film begins with scenes of the devastation in January and then moves on to show how order and some semblance of normality are emerging through the chaos.

From 21-23 May, seventeen members of the Vincentian Family from the AIC, SVP, Daughters of Charity and Brothers of Charity Services were involved in a 350th Jubilee retreat at Foxhill Retreat Centre, Frodsham, Cheshire. The theme of the retreat was “Waiting on the Spirit” and this explored some of the ways in which St Vincent de Paul and St Louise de Marillac waited upon the Holy Spirit in their own lives and the ways in which the Spirit comes into our lives now. It was also a chance to unwind, pray, relax and enjoy one another’s company in the beauty of God’s creation so evident in the grounds and surrounding woodlands of Foxhill. Highlights of the retreat also included daily Mass and a late night prayer vigil before the feast of Pentecost. All of this plus the glorious bright sunshine and blue sky weather with temperatures in the 80’s made for a perfect weekend. It really was a glimpse of heaven here on earth.

These included representatives from the Society of St Vincent de Paul, Vincentian Millennium Partnership, Daughters of Charity, St Vincent’s School, the Brothers of Charity, the AIC, the Ladies of Charity, Depaul UK, Out There, Christopher Grange, the Vincentian Volunteers, SVP 1833, Company of Mission Priests, Youth SVP and the Congregation of the Mission. From 11am-1pm they put on an a wonderful exhibition in the Crypt Hall of the Cathedral. This was followed followed by Mass at 2pm which was extremely well attended. Archbishop Patrick Kelly, chief celebrant, was joined by his brother bishops, -Vincent Malone, Tom Williams, Arthur Roche, Brian Noble and Michael Campbell – along with over 50 priests connected with the Family. Mass began with a procession of the clergy headed by banner carriers from the various organisations within the Family. The choir, conducted by Sr Maria Robb DC , kept the singing lively and heartfelt with Marnie Taylor, a young blind pupil from St Vincent’s School, singing “The Lord hears the Cry of the Poor” as the Responsorial Psalm. At the end of the Mass the leaders of various organisations in the Family re-dedicated their organisation anew to the service of vulnerable people by reciting the 350th Jubilee Prayer together.
